As a photo enthusiast, I spend a fair amount of time in Melbourne’s CBD, so it would make sense to start doing more food reviews in the city. Well – thats my theory anyway.
Kings and Knaves Espresso is a cute lil’ espresso bar/cafe located next to the courts on William Street. Specialising in gourmet toast, their offerings are far more than just your average jam spread.
My visit took place on a weekday morning, where I arrived to a thriving venue. Haha I had to laugh, I felt pretty out of place wearing my full gym attire, in contrast to the highly polished individuals sporting their designer suits, discussing all things that high powered business people talk about (whatever that is).
Smoked salmon (on grain toast) with baby beets, dill, lemon zest, cream cheese & rocket $12.
Oh wow, what a delightful dish. Every element of the plate was superb – succulent smoked salmon accumulating nicely with the beets, cream cheese and rocket. The quality of the toast was high, in addition to being perfectly cooked. Great serving size too – ideal for an efficient breakfast or lunch.
Service was professional, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Suffice to say, I felt extremely comfortable siting there (haha in my highly fashionable gym tights) eating my toast, watching the world go by.
Also, try to score a window seat – good source of natural light, with a lovely view of William Street.
If you’re in Melbourne’s CBD, Kings & Knaves is absolutely worth visiting. Probably some of the best toast in Melbourne, combined with fantastic staff, and lively atmosphere. Great work guys.
